Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year. Anxiety disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events.*

Close to half of those with anxiety disorder also suffer from depression.

The good news: anxiety disorders are highly treatable.* In fact, anxiety disorder may have the best prognosis of any psychological disorder.

Some levels of anxiety are normal and even healthy, but if your nervousness, excessive rumination, catastrophic thinking, or panic impairs your life, you may have an anxiety disorder.

Characterizations of Anxiety:

  • Thoughts: “What if something bad is about to happen…”

  • Moods: Nervous, Anxious, Panic Attack

  • Behaviors: Avoidance, Limit activities, Safety behaviors, such as staying close to home

  • Physical Functioning: Rapid heart rate, dry mouth, sweating not due to heat, brain chemistry changes
