Major depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. For some individuals, major depression can result in severe impairments that interfere with or limit one’s ability to carry out major life activities.*

It is estimated that 7-12% of men and 20-25% of women will have a major depressive episode at some point in their life.

Depression can be expressed in a variety of symptoms involving the following:

  • Mood: sadness, irritability, anger, anxiety, and nervousness

  • Thinking: negative thoughts including self-criticism

  • Behavior: withdrawing and avoiding people and activities that used to provide you pleasure

  • Physical functioning: fatigue and insomnia

An alteration in brain chemistry is also associated with depression.
